Five things you do daily that damage your hair

Haircare is always a topic of discussion in beauty circles. Almost everyone was smooth, silky hair, but almost everyone has different opinions on how to get there. However, with science involved, there are definite prescriptions that determine how you should treat your hair. And it turns out, many aspects of your daily hair washing and styling routine can actually be damaging to your beautiful locks.

1. Using a blow dryer or straightener every day

Exposing your hair to heat on a regular basis can cause serious damage. Not only does it lead to split ends, but it can cause frizz and other conditions that are far from silky and smooth. If you must use a blow dryer regularly, make sure to switch to a cool setting when you're done. This will help close the hair shaft and result in smooth and glossy hair.

2. Washing your hair in hot water

Most people enjoy warm showers, but you should make sure to turn the temperature down when you start washing your hair. Once again, the heat can cause damage and might even dry out your scalp. Instead, change the temperature to lukewarm or even cold if you can stand it. Also, be gentle with your hair when working in the shampoo. Gently massage it into your scalp instead of scrubbing.

3. Shampooing your hair every day

It has become common practice to wash your hair daily, but you don't actually need to. Some people can have healthy hair while washing just once a week. Others have to wash every other day or every two days. The frequency of washing depends on your hair type and your activity level. If you run frequently, you'll probably have to wash your hair more often as oil builds up. You want to keep as much natural oil in your hair as you can and washing every day actually removes a lot of those oils.

4. Drying your hair with a towel

You want to let your hair air dry as much as possible. Instead of taking a towel to it and rubbing to dry, use a highly absorbent towel to mop up excess moisture and then air dry. Rubbing your hair forcefully with a towel can damage hair shafts and lead to frizzy hair. When your hair is wet, you want to be as gentle as possible with it because your hair shafts can easily stretch or break.

5. Brushing your styling your hair when it's wet

Again, the same gentleness applies here. If you must brush your hair while it's wet, use a wide-toothed comb. Start near the bottom and work your way up as gently as possible. This will help preserve your hair shafts and keep your locks smooth and silky.
