How to make Instagram's favorite breakfasts

There are some food and Instagram trends that leave you scratching your head. Cue unicorn food. But smoothie bowls and avocado toast are popular not just because they are really photogenic, but because they are packed with nutrients and easy to make. On top of that, they are filling options great for any time of the day.

Altered or the exactly the same, these two popular Instagram recipes are the perfect healthy alternative for breakfast.

1. Acai bowls

Acai bowls have been trending on Instagram for several years and it's not just because it's extra photogenic. The Brazilian fruit is packed with antioxidants and linked with weight loss. You can purchase acai packages at local health fruit stores, grocery stores like Trader Joes or Whole Foods or in bulk on amazon. If you're not an acai fan or can't find it, swap the acai out for other fruits for a similar, healthy breakfast. Any fruit that can go into a smoothie is fair game.

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages frozen acai puree
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • ¼ cup strawberries
  • 1 fresh banana
  • ¼ cup blueberries
  • ¼ raspberries
  • ½ granola
  • coconut flakes

Directions: Run smoothie packs under water. Break packs into chunks and put into the blender. Add half of the banana, peanut butter and almond milk into blender. Blend until a thick smoothie consistency. Transfer to bowl. Slice strawberries and remaining half of banana. Top the bowl with fruit, granola and coconut. Eat immediately.

2. Avocado toast

Avocado is magical super food that's not just for guacamole. Packed with over 20 nutrients and vitamins, avocados come with a healthy dose of fat, two grams of protein and 160 calories. It's low carb, low sodium and low cholesterol. Combined with egg's protein, and arugula's own nutrients, this arugula, avocado and egg toast is a healthy kick off for your day.

Ingredients:

  • ½ avocado
  • 1 slice of whole-grain rye or wheat bread
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup arugula
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • red pepper flakes to taste
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions: Scramble, poach, sunny side up or boil your egg. Scoop avocado into bowl. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice, one tablespoon of olive oil, salt and pepper into bowl. Mash together. Toast bread. Spread mash onto toast. Toss arugula in remaining olive oil and lemon juice. Top the avocado mash with arugula and egg. Add red pepper flakes to taste.
