Why I Replaced My Expensive Mattress with Nectar Sleep

Why I Replaced My Expensive Mattress with Nectar Sleep

If you can’t remember how old your mattress is, it’s probably time to replace it. My luxury pillow-top mattress was the most expensive thing I bought when I moved to New York City nearly a decade ago, but I justified the purchase figuring I spend a third of my life asleep. I went to one of those stuffy mattress stores with fluorescent lighting and worn-in floor model mattresses and laid down on four or five that were honestly impossible to tell apart. I ended up buying one on the higher side for no other reason other than assuming a higher price tag meant better quality.

I took that mattress with me from apartment to apartment, and never thought much about it until my boyfriend started sleeping over, because we kept rolling into each other while we slept – it felt like we were sleeping on a slant. I bought a mattress topper to see if it would help (it didn’t), and we started to feel like we were sleeping in a giant taco shell. The mattress itself felt like it weighed a couple hundred pounds when we lifted it, which as I found out was a result of oil, dead skin, and sweat that naturally builds up in mattresses (ew!), so I decided it was time to replace it.

My friend told me she had gotten her new bed from one of those “mattress in a box” companies online. Buying a mattress and replacing my old one without trying it first seemed like a gamble, but I talked to a bunch of my friends and it turns out a lot of people are buying their mattress online. I read a ton of reviews and ended up landing on Nectar as my mattress of choice. The price was the best value by far, and it came with an option for white glove service where their team would actually replace my old mattress and deliver my new one – no need to worry about getting it home or getting rid of my old one. And to top it all off, they offer a 365 night home trial so I felt like I had nothing to lose.

I figured that even if the mattress sucked, I could add a mattress topper (which I ordered ahead of time on Amazon assuming the worst), but my new Nectar was actually perfect. When I first opened it up and unrolled it, it felt like it could be too firm, but I gave it time to naturally expand after unpacking it, and it got more comfortable. I’m shocked to admit that it’s actually more comfortable than my old mattress that was more than double the price.

If you haven’t replaced your mattress in a while or can’t remember how long you’ve had yours, it’s probably time for an upgrade. And as I learned, an upgrade doesn’t have to mean you’re spending more. I ended up spending a fraction of what I shelled out on my old mattress and got a better mattress out of it. Now, I sleep more soundly than I have in ages, and never want to leave my bed.
