The holiday season is here. And it’s crunch time. 'Tis the season for giving and gifting — but before that, 'tis the season for shopping. Lots of it. It’s time to hunt down the best deals, the best gifts, and solidify your status as the best gift giver in your family. Well, what better way to find unique, thoughtful gifts than shopping at BIPOC-owned businesses?
Did you know that, generally, consumers only allocate 0.4% of their holiday spending for Black-owned businesses? This startling number begins to make more sense when you realize that historically, Black-owned businesses only occupied about 1% of shelf space at major retailers.
Next time you’re in a major department store or mainstream retailer, check out how many Black or BIPOC-owned products you see. Most likely, the numbers will be a little depressing.
Although the past few years have seen some huge improvements, it’s up to us as consumers to put our dollars behind diverse brands. By supporting BIPOC-owned brands this season, we encourage stores to make room on the shelves — and in the virtual space — for diverse founders. This can lead to positive changes all the way to the top of the ladder. If that’s not the holiday spirit, I don’t know what is.
Get that warm and fuzzy holiday feeling by shopping BIPOC-owned businesses — especially small businesses. You’ll be making a difference with each dollar you spend. And you don’t have to compromise on style, creativity, or quality — no matter your budget.
There are so many fantastic BIPOC-owned brands in all industries. So, whether you’re doing your part or you’re just looking for some fresh gift ideas, look no further.
